Community notebook: Hoops on the River returns to downtown

The Hoops on the River three-on-three basketball tournament takes place Saturday and Sunday at Esther Short Park in Vancouver.

More than 200 teams and up to 1,000 players are expected to participate in the 10th edition of the tournament. The divisions range from elite men’s teams to youth teams as young as first graders. There is also a special Service Division for members of the military, police, fire and EMT agencies.

Registration closed on Friday.

Sport courts will be set up on Eighth Street and on Columbia, with the two center courts near the clock tower in the northeast corner of the park.

This is the third year that the Hoops on the River will take place around Esther Short Park and be stages as a benefit for One Team Kids Foundation, a Vancouver-based organization that provides scholarships to students who need financial help to participate in extra-curricular activities including sports.

A free basketball clinic for Clark County youths will be held on Friday. Shoot 360, a local basketball training agency, will run a session 5-6 p.m. for students entering grades 1-3 and from 6-7 p.m. for students entering grades 4-6. Each session is limited to 60 participants. Register online at www.hoopsontheriver.org/kids-clinic.

An invitation-only King of the Court competition will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Triathlon weekend at Frenchman’s Bar

The Columbia River Triathlon Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday at Frenchman’s Bar Park.

Saturday features a variety of races for women only: a sprint triathlon, a sprint distance duathlon, a sprint aqua-bike race, a 10-kilometer run or a 5-kilometer run. All begin at 9 a.m.

Sunday’s races are open to men and women and include sprint and Olympic distance triathlon, duathlon (run and bike) and aqua-bike.

Special Olympians earn medals

Five softball teams from Clark County Special Olympics won gold medals at the Southwest Washington Regional Tournament played on July 23 in Olympia. Those teams advanced to the Special Olympics Washington state tournament which was played Saturday and Sunday in Everett.

Results from the state tournament were not available on Monday.

Winning gold medals for Clark County at the regionals were the Cardinals, Hornets, Mariners, Pirates and Reds. For complete results and team rosters for Clark County softball teams, see the Community Sports Scoreboard.

At the Southwest Washington Regional Special Olympics Golf Tournament, Calvin Ertler won a gold medal as a member of the Clark County Chippers.

In partners play, Larry Mathews and Barry Gill won a gold medal during the regional tournament held July 24 at Meadow Park Golf Course in Tacoma.

Swim club’s reunion is Friday

Vancouver Swim Club on Friday will celebrate 50 years of competitive swimming. The reunion, open to anyone with a connection to the club, will begin with an open swim at Marshall Community Center from 3 to 5 p.m.

A social gathering will follow from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Luepke Center next door to the pool. The club will supply burgers, hot dogs and cold drinks. Potluck dishes are also welcome.

Repeat winner in CCRC’s Leverich run

For the second consecutive week, Jesse McChesney won the Clark County Running Club’s 5-kilometer race at Leverich Park. McChesney, 28, won the Aug. 10 run with a time of 15 minutes and 45 seconds. He was 15 seconds faster then Oscar Bauman and 17 seconds in front of Ahrlin Bauman.

Katarina Mueller, 24, was the first female to finish. Her time of 19:36 was 12th fastest among the 124 who recorded official times for the 3.1-mile course.

The CCRC’s summer series of Wednesday runs shifts this week to Marine Park for a flat course. The run starts at 7 p.m. with registration at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $2.
