Long-distance hiker progressing on Continental Divide Trail

LEADORE, Idaho — Jeff Garmire of Vancouver was 20 days and approximately 685 miles into the Continental Divide Trail on Wednesday as he pushes south in his quest to complete the Triple Crown of long-distance hiking in a calendar year.

He has already completed the Appalachian and Pacific Crest trails this year and is now on the hardest, longest and most remote of America’s three great long-distance routes.

On Tuesday, Garmire was near the headwaters of the Missouri River, having crossed Goldstone Pass.

“I closed out my day by slowly feeling my energy drain out of me and I slowed to a halt a couple of miles before I had hoped,’’ he wrote on his blog. “One of my rules is not to argue with my body so I called it a day. I have been averaging close to 40 miles per day outside of town stops and am going to settle in and rest with a 20-mile town day in Leadore. I am exhausted and have been having a sore Achilles so some rest will be nice.’’

His progress can be followed online at http://freeoutside.com.
