New on DVD: Some unlikely duos go up against the bad guys

Heroes take the forefront in this week’s new DVD releases:

• “The Nice Guys” HH: Shane Black put together what has become a major template in the buddy cop genre as the writer of “Lethal Weapon.” His design mostly depends on giving his characters snappy dialogue and letting that play out against a background that is slightly askew.

He uses that formula as writer-director of “The Nice Guys,” a buddy crime story set in 1977. A series of murders and a missing woman (Margaret Qualley) bring private investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and strong-arm specialist Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) together. Neither man is especially competent but together — and with some help from March’s young daughter, Holly (Angourie Rice) — they just might save the day.

• “Ratchet & Clank” HH 1/2 : A space hero and his robot companion must stop an evil force. Based on the popular video game. “Ratchet & Clank” film is designed to make sure fans of the video game get a nostalgic kick.

So many years have past since the original video game was released that the movie now has to deal with comparisons to other movies and TV shows that fit the genre.

• “The Hunstman: Winter’s War” H: This weak attempt to make a sequel to “The Hunstman” without Snow White falls flat. It’s more of a weak copy of “Frozen.”

Emily Blunt tries her best to be wicked but the real wicked star played by Charlize Theron is only given limited screen time. More could have been done as the story is painfully slow.

• “Clean Break”: Four-part crime drama about greed in a small town.

• “Elementary: The Fourth Season”: Jonny Lee Miller portrays the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes.

• “Masterpiece Mystery: Inspector Lewis Season 8”: Inspector Lewis and Inspector Hathaway investigate new cases of murder and other crimes.

• “NCIS: The 13th Season”: Includes the episode where Michael Weatherly leaves.

• “Sunset Song”: Coming of age story set in the shadows of World War I.

• “The Man Who Knew Infinity”: Math genius must deal with prejudice. Jeremy Irons stars.

• “The Walking Dead: The Complete Sixth Season”: Safety is only an illusion in these episodes of the cable series.

• “Lucifer: The Complete First Season”: FOX series about Lucifer’s days on Earth.

• “Wild Kratts: Wild Reptiles”: Martin and Chris Kratt turn to wild reptiles to help them save the day.

• “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete First Season”: Rip Hunter leads a group of heroes through time.

• “Narcos: Season One”: Look at the life of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.

• “The Duel”: Texas Ranger investigates a series of murders in a small town.
