The Portland Timbers have transferred midfielder George Fochive to Viborg FF of Denmark’s top league.
Terms of the transfer were not announced. The Timbers likely will receive allocation money from Major League Soccer as a result of the transfer.
Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson said Fochive was interested in the move. Wilkinson noted that the Timbers have depth at the midfield position Fochive plays.
A third-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by the Timbers, Fochive played in 11 matches last season with eight starts. He appeared as a substitute in one playoff match last season.
The defensive midfield position Fochive played with Portland is perhaps the deepest on the Timbers roster. Diego Chara has been a mainstay at the position since the Timbers entered MLS. Jack Jewsbury and Ben Zemanski have experience there, and 2015 first-round draft pick Nick Besler also plays the position.
“George has made tremendous strides in his development since he was drafted and we are very proud of this growth in our environment,” Timbers coach Caleb Porter said. “It has been an initiative of our club to have young players flourish in their careers here and this was a great opportunity for him to keep progressing.”
The Timbers play their second preseason game on Wednesday against the Houston Dynamo in Tucson. The match starts at 5 p.m. and will be streamed live on Timbers.com.
