A student at Columbia River High School struck another student in the head with a metal, club-like instrument Thursday morning before fleeing the scene, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies are investigating.

Law enforcement received a report of the assault around 11 a.m. The alleged assailant was found on campus, then arrested, after he allegedly tossed the weapon in a nearby ravine, the sheriff’s office said. He was booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of felony assault.

Emergency medical workers treated the victim at the scene for an open laceration to the head, according to the sheriff’s office, and he was taken to a hospital. His injuries were not  life-threatening.

The sheriff’s office said detectives with the office’s Major Crimes Team are investigating due to the severity of the assault.

Volunteers from local search-and-rescue organizations combed the wooded ravine and found the weapon in the underbrush, according to the sheriff’s office.
