Community notebook: Vancouver youth boxers claim regional titles

Two youth boxers from Vancouver won regional Silver Gloves championships over the weekend in Boise.

Austin Morales won the Region 7 title at 100 pounds for in the 11-12 age division.

Ho’okoa Gabriel won the title at 85 pounds in the 11-12 age division. Each had to beat one opponent to win the regional.

Both advance to the Silver Gloves national championships. The nationals will take place Feb. 3-7 near Kansas City, Mo. Eight regional champions advance to the nationals in each weight division.

Morales, representing West Portland Boxing, beat an opponent from Montana for his regional championship. He also won an additional exhibition match while at the Boise event.

Gabriel, representing Fisticuffs Gym in Vancouver, beat an opponent from Idaho.

The regional included state champion youth boxers from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Gabriel and Morales were Oregon state champions.

Boxer reaches national semifinals

Victor Morales, Jr., of Vancouver reached the semifinals of the USA Boxing Youth National Championships last week in Reno, Nev.

Boxing at 123 pounds, Morales won his first three matches before losing to Keyshawn Davis of Norfolk, Va., in the semifinals.

In 2014, Morales won the youth national title at 119 pounds during the championships in Reno.

Resolution Run races draw 366

Benjamin Thomas of Portland won the 10-kilometer race during Sunday’s Resolution Run in Battle Ground. Thomas, 32, completed the 6.2-mile course in 37 minutes and 43 seconds to win by 15 seconds.

Konrad Raum was Leconte in 37:58 and Justin Ashworth of Battle Ground third in 38:33.

Laura Min, 27, of La Center was the first female to finish the 10-K course. Her time of 41:55 was 42 seconds faster than runner-up Kelly Cole of Vancouver.

A total of 150 runners and walkers completed the 10-kilometer course.

The 5-kilometer winner was Joe Dudman, 51, of Portland. He completed the 3.1-mile course in 18:30 to finish 12 seconds in front of Robert Roper, 39, of Vancouver. William Sayers, 35, of Vancouver finished third in 18:46.

Laura Bocko, 30, of Portland was the women’s winner with a time of 20:46 that was 25 seconds faster than Gretchen Funk of Portland.

At total of 216 runners and walkers completed the 5-K course.

Staged by Get Bold Events, the Resolution Run benefitted the Clark County Fire and Rescue Fire Cadet Program Booster Club.

More than 60 complete CCRC runs

A total of 62 runners participated in runs along the Heritage Trail on Saturday. The Clark County Running Club event offered 3-, 7- and 10-mile circuits for the runners.

Eric Dolezal, 33 of Vancouver won the 10-mile race with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 11 seconds. Jenny Teppo, 56, of Vancouver finished second among 23 10-milers with a time of 1:12:26.

At the 7-mile distance, Gary Daubenspeck of Hood River, Ore., and Stan Holman of Carson both finished in 47:38.

At the 3-mile distance. Mario Beaudoin of Camas won in 18:24, nine seconds in front of Katarina Mueller.

Results from these races are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

The CCRC’s marquee event, the Vancouver Lake Half Marathon, will take place at 10 a.m. Jan. 24. That event helps fund college scholarships for CCRC member students.

This week, the CCRC run is along the Salmon Creek Trail at 10 a.m. Saturday. Participants can choose to run 3 or 6 miles. Visit clarkcountyrunningclub.org for details.

Youth lacrosse club hosts free clinic

Registration is open for the Clark County Youth Lacrosse spring season. To sign up go to ccylax.org.

Clark County Youth Lacrosse is a newly formed club that combines Vancouver, King’s Way, and Union lacrosse programs. It offers programs for boys and girls in grades 1-8.

Practices start in early March. Registration is open through March. The club serves the students who live in the Vancouver, Evergreen, Ridgefield, La Center, Battle Ground and Hockinson school districts.

Learn-to-play clinics are scheduled for Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at Gaiser Middle School and from 2 to 3 p.m. at Cascade Middle School. These free clinics are an introduction to lacrosse.

On Wednesday, a portion of proceeds collected between 5 and 8 p.m. at two Burgerville restaurants will go to Clark County Youth Lacrosse. The Hazel Dell restaurant at 99th Street and Highway 99 and the Fishers Landing restaurant at 164th Avenue and McGillivray are participating.
