VANCOUVER — The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington awarded $296,798 in grants to 31 local nonprofits and school districts.

Over the last few months, a committee reviewed over 62 applications and doled out $191,029 to Clark County projects, such as Bridgeview Housing’s construction of an employment and resource center, and Second Step Housing’s Stepping Up to Eliminate Poverty program. The remaining $105,418 went to Cowlitz County organizations, such as the Children’s Justice and Advocacy Center, the Ethnic Support Council and Cowlitz County Head Start Early Learning Center.

The Vancouver-headquartered Community Foundation decided in 2013 to focus its grants on programs that interrupt the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Grants in the second cycle will be awarded in December.
