A Beaverton, Ore., man was hospitalized Wednesday evening after falling 20 to 25 feet from a rock face near the Cape Horn trail in Skamania County.

Skamania County Undersheriff Pat Bond said Jerad West, 29, was hiking with a brother and a friend late Wednesday afternoon when they found they’d lost track of their planned climbing route. The climb was more technical than anticipated, and West fell, injuring his leg.

Officials with the sheriff’s office, Washington State Patrol, Skamania County Emergency Medical Services, Skamania fire districts 4 and 5 and the Camas-Washougal Fire Department responded.

Emergency personnel were able to reach and stabilize West, then, using a rope system, pulled him up to the road to an ambulance, Bond said. West was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.

Traffic on state Highway 14 alternated lanes for a few hours during the incident.
