Officers arrested a man in Portland on Wednesday afternoon after he led law enforcement on a chase from a reported shooting and brandishing incident in Clark County that morning.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office received a call of shots fired at a vehicle in the Shilo Inn parking lot, 13206 N.E. Highway 99, at about 8:45 a.m., according to the agency’s spokesman, Fred Neiman.

A short time later, troopers with the Washington State Patrol spotted a teal Honda Civic that reportedly had been involved in a brandishing and possible shooting, Trooper Will Finn said. The vehicle was reported stolen, Finn said.

A trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle continued south into Oregon, Finn said. The trooper lost sight of the vehicle near the Highway 30 offramp, Finn said.

Portland Police Bureau officers located the stolen vehicle around the 900 block of North Vancouver Way, but the suspect already had fled the area on foot, according to Portland police.

Officers searching the area did not find the suspect, whom the police identified as Cory James Jackson, 35. Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson said the agency’s records list Jackson as a transient.

Detectives learned that Jackson may have had a room at the Viking Motel, 6701 N. Interstate Ave. They arrived and surveilled the area, then watched as Jackson returned alone and entered a room.

Because Jackson was thought to possibly have a gun, the Portland SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called in to help make an arrest, police said.

Jackson surrendered without incident at around 1:15 p.m., and the arrest closed Interstate Avenue in Portland for about an hour, police said.

Portland police said Jackson would be booked into the Multnomah County Jail, but investigators were still working Monday afternoon and had yet to recommended any charges.

Neiman said deputies at the scene in Clark County were since unable to find any evidence of gunshots.

They did find evidence of a possible hit-and-run type of crash, he said.

“The only charges we might have would be malicious mischief or something along those lines,” Neiman said. “It looks like a deliberate attempt to cause damage.”
