Save the Date: Hazel Dell, Rose Festival parades march us closer to summer

Students playing trumpets, drums and tubas will march along as the 52nd annual Hazel Dell Parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. today. The parade starts from the Fire District 6, Station 1, 8800 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave., travels south along Hazel Dell Avenue, crosses at Northeast 63rd to Highway 99, and heads north before ending at 78th Street. www.facebook.com/HazelDellParade

The Vancouver Watersheds Alliance presents a different environmental film every fourth Tuesday of the month, complete with free pizza and discussion. This moth, “Plant This Movie” explores the world of urban farming, from Portland to Cuba, narrated by Daryl Hannah. The Cedar Creek Grist Mill will be cooking up Bread and Butter Day from noon to 4 p.m. May 28. Visitors to the 1876 building will be treated to fresh bread made from wheat milled on site, topped with butter churned by hand on site at 43907 N.E. Grist Mill Road, Woodland. The Portland Rose Festival will open with its CityFair at 5 p.m. May 27, complete with opening night fireworks at 9:45 p.m. along the Gov. Tom McCall Waterfront Park, 1020 S.W. Naito Parkway, Portland. The fair festivities continue through the weekend from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. May 28-30, June 4-5 and June 11-12, 3 to 11 p.m. June 2-3 and June 9-10. Admission is $8 for ages 7 and older, free admission for military members. Other big dates to mark on your calendar is the festival’s Starlight Run at and Starlight Parade June 4, Fleet Week will take place June 8 through June 12, Dragon Boat Races June 11 and June 12, and the Grand Floral Parade starts at 10 a.m. June 11. www.rosefestival.org

• Gear up for the Camas Farmer’s Market as it opens for the season on June 1. The weekday market will feature locally grown produce, flowers, meat, cheese and prepared foods from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, through Sept. 28 in downtown Camas, along Northeast Fourth Avenue between Northeast Everett and Franklin streets. The Vancouver Farmers Market will be returning to its east Vancouver location on June 2. Ridgefield will be taking to its waterways during the Big Paddle, celebrating an ongoing connection to the water from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 4. There will be interpretive paddles for those in canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, along with a Paddler’s Village featuring live music, activities and obstacle course at the waterfront, 5 W. Mill St., Ridgefield. There will be an opening ceremony and blessing by the Chinook Indian Nation, along with a closing ceremony, bonfire and s’mores. The Craft Beer and Winefest of Vancouver celebrates the wineries of Clark County and Washington State. Visitors can try more 150 different wines, along with 30 craft beers and spirits.
