The Vancouver Police Department is investigating a report that a man stole a woman’s engagement ring after responding to her online ad to sell it.

According to the police, the man and the woman met around 4 p.m. Saturday at the Macy’s at the Vancouver Mall after he responded to her online advertisement.

The man wanted to confirm that the ring was real with the jeweler there. The woman left to get some appraisal paperwork for the ring and returned to meet the man.

The man handed her a stack of clearly fake cash, the police said, then he grabbed the ring and ran off.

With store loss protection staff giving chase, the man jumped in what looked like a white Ford Taurus station wagon and rode away. A woman was driving, the police said.

Anyone with helpful information on the case can call 311.
