State auditor candidates weigh in on issues

The Columbian Editorial Board met with state Sen. Mark Miloscia, R-Federal Way, and Pierce County Auditor Pat McCarthy, a Democrat, on Tuesday. The two candidates are running for state auditor.

Current Auditor Troy Kelley was indicted on federal fraud charges in 2015. Although he did take a leave of absence, Kelley rejected calls to resign and did not seek re-election.

According to the Seattle Times, the Auditor’s office conducts about 2,400 audits a year and helps train officials in how they can improve their operations — for example, by helping county planning departments streamline their rules so they can issue building permits more quickly.
