Smoking materials cause of garage fire

A garage fire Monday that displaced four people was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials, Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Curtis Eavenson said.

Firefighters from three agencies responded to the blaze at 12115 N.E. 46th Ave. at 9:23 a.m. and crews arrived to find a three-bay garage engulfed in flames. They doused the fire, keeping it from spreading to the house and bringing it under control within about 30 minutes. No one was inside and no one was injured.

The damage to the structure and contents was an estimated $125,000, Eavenson said.

He added that the fire, which heavily damaged the garage and a vehicle parked outside, is a good reminder to always use a noncombustible container when putting out smoking materials.
