Special season, special sports and a special section

There’s something special about high school sports.

High school sports in the fall, though, have a unique feel.

The school community comes back together after the summer. Barbecue, fresh-cut grass and sunshine still entice the senses.

Oh, and did we mention football?

There’s no high school sport like it. And this year, Southwest Washington is home to some of the best football in the state.

You have the defending 4A state champion in Camas. League rival Skyview returns many key players from a team that reached last year’s state semifinals. Union could give them each a challenge.

Mountain View defends its 3A league title with its deepest team in years.

Hockinson returns the region’s most prolific passer and hopes to make a deep run in the 2A state playoffs.

La Center, a 1A semifinalist last year, has state championship goals with the largest senior class in program history.

We at the Columbian are committed to covering it all. And it starts today with our 44-page High School Fall Sports 2017 special section.

You’ll find features, starting lineups and schedules for every local football team. You’ll also see analysis, predictions and top games for every league in Southwest Washington.

But football isn’t all that’s happening. Girls soccer, volleyball, cross country, boys tennis, girls swimming and boys golf all offer a full roster of compelling storylines.

As a community-focused newspaper, we’re glad to make this commitment to cover high school sports. It’s what we’re passionate about. It’s what we do best.

In many ways, high school sports and the athletes who play them represent the best attributes of our community.

And we’re here to tell their stories.
