Olympia – State health officials on Friday announced a salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon.

The outbreak involves pre-cut watermelon, cantaloupe and fruit mixes containing those melons. Health officials urge people who purchased those products between Oct. 25 and Friday from QFC, Fred Meyer, Rosauers and Central Market stores in Washington and Oregon to throw them away.

Eighteen people from six Washington counties — five cases in King, seven in Snohomish and one each in Mason, Pierce, Thurston and Yakima counties — and two people from Oregon have been diagnosed with salmonella, according to the state Department of Health.

Health officials are working with state and federal partners to determine the source of the fruit, including where is was cut and packaged, and if there are additional retailers where the products were sold.
