Letter: We need standards for president

By Joan M. Tyrrell, VANCOUVER
Published: July 20, 2017, 6:00am

I’m responding to Tom Fuelling’s July 15 letter, “Trump proves changes are needed.” I agree with him wholeheartedly.

President Trump is getting away with nepotism, personal profiteering, refusal to show his tax returns, etc. There should be federal laws in place to prohibit this behavior.

I would like to expound on other areas that should be addressed before being elected:

• A mental evaluation should be mandatory.

• Political experience should be required.

There should be no place in our government for someone who lacks experience, integrity, trustworthiness, mental stability and a code of ethics. If changes aren’t made for specific requirements to be president it could go from bad to worse in our next election.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
