A fire Tuesday heavily damaged a garage and its contents and displaced two people in east Vancouver.

Firefighters were called to 2280 N.E. 128th Ave. at about 10:30 a.m. for a structure fire, according to emergency dispatch logs.

Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Mark Johnston said an engine crew was on its way back from a call when it spotted smoke, then went to investigate.

They found that a home’s attached garage had caught fire, along with the vehicle and contents inside.

“When they got there, they were right on it, so their response time was about 3 minutes total,” he said.

He said the fire did extensive damage to the garage and everything inside.

Johnston said the home’s two occupants reported the fire when they opened a door to the garage. There were no smoke detectors in the garage.

Firefighters were on the scene for about 40 minutes, he said, and no one was hurt. The home was not damaged by the fire, but Johnston said it caused smoke damage.

The Red Cross responded to help the occupants. The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating.
