Letter: Time to care about fellow citizens

By Paul Dodds, VANCOUVER

Both Leonard Pitts’ column “Black jocks being ‘uppity’?” (Oct. 1), and The Columbian’s editorial “Confront Carnage” (Oct. 3), are spot on. For defenders of the status quo, it is never an appropriate time for people to protest and there is never an appropriate forum. Predictably, in the wake of the most recent massacre, many have come out and said that it is not the right time to talk about gun control. To the contrary, this is exactly the time to talk about it, while the issue is front and center and the eyes of the nation are watching.

The painful reality, however, is that as long as it is someone else’s spouse, child, parent or friend shot down, a significant number of Americans care more about an untrammeled ability to possess an unlimited number of firearms than they do about the lives of their fellow citizens.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
