The Camas boys soccer team opened the season with a rigorous schedule of eight matches in 13 days.

But given the new head coach and a lineup of new faces on the field, it may have been the perfect way to get ready for the league season.

The Papermakers wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, tallying their first goal in the opening 30 seconds en route to a 4-0 win over Heritage in the 4A Greater St. Helens League opener for Camas.

Camas took the opening kick, sent the ball quickly up the left side, where forward Brennan Martin sent a shot across the face of the goal from 30 yards away and tucked it into the side of the net for a quick 1-0 lead.

“That early goal was really nice,” senior Jake Fuller said. “It really helped us settle down.”

The Papermakers didn’t waste much time adding on, with Fuller converting for the second goal in the ninth minute.

“I passed the ball to Luke (Davidson), Luke hit a great ball back to me,” Fuller said. “I have to give a lot of credit back to him. And from there, I just placed it. Both times, Luke assisted me on that.”

Fuller got a second goal in the 55th minute to make it 3-0. Then Fuller returned the favor, assisting Davidson on the match’s final goal in the 70th minute.

The Papermakers improved 4-3-2 overall under first-year coach Dan Macaya. One of the team captains, Fuller is one three players with three years of varsity experience. But this year’s Papermakers have about a dozen players in their first year of varsity play.

Because of that, it’s taken a little bit of time for the squad to come together, Fuller said.

“Dan was moving people around, seeing where people fit,” the senior said. “I definitely feel like we have a good lineup right now. We can still move things around a little bit, but I’m liking the way things are at right now.”
