A fire damaged a house in the Hough neighborhood Monday late afternoon.

Firefighters were called to 511 W. 17th St. shortly before 5 p.m., according to dispatch logs.

Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Kevin Stromberg said the first crews on the scene met the family, who said everyone got out safe, and encountered light smoke coming from the front door.

Firefighters entered the home and found a small fire burning in the basement. It took about 10 minutes to bring under control, Stromberg said.

While the fire damage was limited to the basement, there was smoke damage throughout the house, he said.

The Red Cross responded to help the occupants, four adults and three children, with immediate post-disaster needs. No one was injured, Stromberg said.

The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating.
