The Red Cross responded to help a family of six after a mattress in their apartment caught fire Thursday afternoon, filling the residence with smoke.

Firefighters were called to the apartment complex, at 7007 N.E. 44th Circle, near Vancouver Mall, around 1:30 p.m.

Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Kevin Stromberg said the fire was contained to the mattress, which burned in a third-floor, loft-like space in one of the apartment units.

The Red Cross was called to help the two adults and four children at the apartment with immediate post-disaster needs.

No one was hurt, and the Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating.
