The Vancouver Mavericks came up short in a pitcher’s duel Friday night, losing 1-0 to Taylor Baseball of Seattle in pool play of the Curt Daniels Invitational at Concordia University in Portland.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 1-2 in the Blue Pool with two games to play.

The Vancouver Cardinals also fell to 1-2 after an 8-2 Red Pool loss to Lakeside Recovery of Bellevue on Friday at Columbia River High School.

The top two teams in each six-team pool will meet in Monday’s semifinals.

Taylor Baseball (3-0), playing the second game of a doubleheader beating the Seattle Stars 5-4, broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with just its fifth hit of the game.

The Mavericks had a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh with one out but the next two batters were retired. They also had a runner thrown out at home to end the top of the second.

The Mavericks had just four hits and struck out eight times.

Mavericks pitcher Wyatt Rogina struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in six innings.

The Vancouver Cardinals played from behind the entire game against Lakeside, which scored three times in the first inning and padded the lead with a four-run seventh. Lakeside (1-2) was playing the second game of a doubleheader, coming off a 3-2 loss to Boys of Summer from Bellevue.

For the Cardinals, Michael Hickey’s sacrifice fly scored Tanner Jacques in the sixth inning, and Noah Guyette was 2 for 3 with a solo home run in the seventh.

The Cardinals next play Boys of Summer (3-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Concordia.

The Mavericks next play the Seattle Stars (2-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Columbia River.
