Letter: Schools are wise investment

I was astonished to read Lou Brancaccio’s June 2 column (“Press Talk: Take a peek at your tax bill“). First he says most of our politicians want to keep our taxes complicated. Then he condemns the money spent on schools as excessive. Say it ain’t so! Does he really think politicians are trying to confuse things? I don’t.

I will concede it happens, just not deliberately. They’re just trying to promote projects they think are good (not that I always agree). And schools are one of the best investments we have. They improve communities in a way few other expenditures can. Not only do they shape our children, but good ones attract productive, educated citizens to our city. When did Brancaccio turn into such a curmudgeon?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
