Weather Eye: Wet weather returns after what felt like May in March

It was 70 degrees from Bellingham to Vancouver on Monday and even warmer in between the state’s borders. Tacoma was 76 degrees; even Seattle beat us with 73 degrees. Can you believe it? It was in the low 70s along the northern Oregon coast and from one end to the other along the Washington coast. Sounds like May weather.

But no, it is only mid-March. But hey, the 70-degree high in Vancouver yesterday was expected as easterly winds helped to warm the lower portion of the atmosphere. I know it felt cooler along the Columbia, which it was. Farther away from the river, it warmed up a few degrees. I saw several highs from Hazel Dell northward to Cowlitz County in the between 72 and 75 degrees.

The warm weather is over and we return to typical spring weather with showers and more seasonable temperatures.

A large trough of low pressure will anchor itself off northern California. The heaviest precipitation will be well south of us. Cooler air filters in Wednesday after a front swings through today. Snow will fall in the mountains but nothing heavy, say 2-4 inches.

The cool air mass will linger through the weekend, but we may yet luck out. As weak weather systems drop south of us, we could see some drier weather Thursday and Friday. Yet there’s still a chance of showers in the forecast. So, I am somewhat optimistic that we get some dry periods and sunshine mixed in. Maybe we stay more dry than wet.

Monday’s high was some 14 degrees above the normal for the date and our warmest day since Oct. 28.
