Letter: Protect information access

By Brock Howell, Seattle
Published: March 20, 2018, 6:00am

It was great to see Gov. Jay Inslee and our Legislature adopt a law preserving our rights to free and open internet. This is a great step in the right direction, but our fight for equal and fair access to the internet is just beginning.

If AT&T and Time Warner are allowed to merge, they will become a behemoth — pushing out competition, driving up costs and reducing access to information. AT&T currently controls all of DirecTV’s satellite dishes and the broadband access of millions, and soon it could control how we experience additional news, sports and entertainment content.

I implore Attorney General Bob Ferguson and all our elected leaders to oppose a merger between AT&T and Time Warner. If our state’s recent net neutrality victory has taught us anything, it is that Washingtonians have the strength and ability to stand up to the Trump administration and enact the laws we need to preserve information access to all Washingtonians.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
