Safeway in Mountain View neighborhood to close soon

A Safeway grocery store in the Mountain View neighborhood appears to be closing soon.

John Beardsley, whose company Beardsley Building Management owns the building at 13719 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd., said the grocery chain told him in December it would not renew its lease.

Beardsley said he was not given a reason but that he felt the store was performing well. Beardsley acquired the store in 2015, years after Safeway spent millions renovating it, he said.

“I can’t understand their logic,” he said.

The 68,000-square-foot location is being marketed as available at the beginning of 2019. Commercial Realty Advisors Northwest, the brokerage overseeing its lease, said rent could cost about $12 per square foot.

Safeway declined to comment. The company last week revealed it would also shutter an “underperforming” location on Jantzen Beach.
