Cascade Park West — Crestline Elementary School fifth-grader Kavika Sione won first place in the Pacific Northwest Region Block Kids Building Competition and was recognized at the National Association of Women in Construction Pacific Northwest Region Forum on April 21 in Salem, Ore. He won the contest for his tower crane with a pyramid-shaped counterweight. “I used to see pyramids when I flew over to Egypt, and I see a lot of cranes around the city,” Kavika said in a release from the association. “That is why inspired me to build my design.” The national competition is held by local association chapters. The Portland chapter held their block-building competition at Crestline on Jan. 26, with 90 fifth-graders participating. The kids all received building kits with 75 Lego blocks, string and foil and were given 40 minutes to build their projects. Kavika’s winning project will be submitted into judging in the national competition against winners from seven other regions across the country.
