A Vancouver woman who slashed her husband’s wrists in a drunken rage was sentenced Friday in Clark County Superior County to two years in prison.

Mary Akana, 30, was initially arrested in June on suspicion of first-degree domestic violence assault. She pleaded guilty Oct. 25 to second-degree domestic violence assault and tampering with a witness.

Akana must also serve 18 months of community custody when she is released.

Defense attorney Erin Bradley McAleer said the agreed-upon sentencing recommendation with the prosecution was fair. He said that if the case had gone to trial, alcohol and mental illness would have been considered as factors in the assault.

Akana declined to speak during the hearing, beyond answering Judge Gregory Gonzales’ questions about past employment.

Vancouver police were called about 12:10 a.m. to the Walnut Grove Landing Apartments at 4701 N.E. 72nd Ave., Vancouver, for a report of a physical disturbance with a weapon. Akana reported that her husband had cut her with a knife.

Her husband was found inside the apartment covered in blood with two deep cuts on each wrist. He was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for treatment, the affidavit says.

He later told police in an interview that he was using the app FaceTime to talk with his son in Hawaii, when Akana heard his ex-wife’s voice in the background and became angry, court records state.

Akana grabbed a large kitchen knife and attacked him. He begged her to stop, he said, but she kept swinging the knife at him. He said he ran outside and pounded on the neighbors’ doors screaming for help, according to court documents.

The husband told Gonzales that Akana has been a good mother, and the whole family has been impacted by what happened.

“I love her and hope she gets better,” he said.
