Letter: It’s all in the name

Responding to letter-writer Tom Knappenberger’s suggestion, “Get creative, name the waterfront” (Oct. 8, Our Readers’ Views), I would like to join in his endeavor. If Vancouver is seeking to build on recognition of its history, identity and growth, then we are entitled to a name of our own for this site, rather than a copy of Portland’s “Waterfront.” As Knappenberger proposes, I think a contest and vote would perhaps be the solution, and maybe The Columbian could get involved. My thoughts at the moment are: (1) Shoreside West, or (2) Riverside Place. I’m sure other readers would have some clever suggestions.

Speaking of names, does anyone else find it embarrassing to be referred to as “The Couve”? Allowing ourselves to be reduced to this nickname does not show proper respect for the first and original Vancouver, and does not lend itself to the identity we take pride in. Just my opinion.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
