Letter: Cartoon misses the mark

The political cartoon in The Columbian on Sept. 1 is unfortunate in that it wrongly depicts the progressive aims of the Democratic Party. It insinuates giving up our “freedom” for socialism, and yet not one single Democrat has made such a suggestion.

Tell the peoples of Scandinavia, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand, et al, that they are “not free.” While not specifically “socialist,” they have all adopted policies and programs, beneficial to their people, from socialism yet remain staunchly democratic. Propositions of health care for all, paid education, and so on do not turn America into a socialist state, but more properly define us as a nation caring for its citizens and preparing itself for the future.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
