Letter: Create campaign finance reform

I hope we can agree (even in these fiercely divided times) that political campaign contributions are a major threat to our democracy. But let’s call it what it really is: legalized bribery. You pay the money and your representative or senator votes that way. And you can forget about any campaign finance solutions from these folks; only you, the voter can solve this.

The rule: Vote for the candidate who solicits and spends the least money. Supporters of Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, may cry foul, but this also applies to our two Democratic senators, one of which is up for re-election. If an incumbent is doing such a bang-up job of representing us, they should not need to spend millions of dollars to convince us.

This is not a perfect solution, but for the sake of our country, we need to start somewhere.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
