A hiker was airlifted to a hospital after falling 20 feet down a steep decline while rappelling near Big Creek Falls in Skamania County Sunday afternoon.

According to the Coast Guard, the hiker reportedly fell the last 20 feet as he was rappelling down a 150-foot decline that morning.

Coast Guard crews attempted to hoist him out, but were unsuccessful, the agency said.

A Skamania County search and rescue team was able to hike in and move the patient to a Life Flight air crew for transport to a hospital, according to the Coast Guard.
