Brad Butterworth has a passion of sports.
As evidence of that, Butterworth played a stint of the 2017-18 season for the Portland Bible College men’s basketball team … at age 39.
“Brad’s a bulldog,” said Daven Harmeling, principal at King’s Way Christian Middle School and high school varsity boys basketball coach. “You’re not going to find someone who will outwork him.”
Butterworth will bring that passion and a wealth of experience to his next endeavor, as the athletic director at King’s Way Christian Schools.
Butterworth will replace Ted Buck in that role when Buck retires in June after a nearly three decade career as a high school coach and administrator.
“Part of what drew me to this position was embracing the legacy that Ted Buck has built at King’s Way and carrying it on,” Butterworth said.
Butterworth has worked the past four years as regional director for Shoot 360, a Vancouver-based national basketball training franchise.
Prior to that, he was the boys basketball coach at Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, Calif., and he coached and was associate athletic director at Capistrano Valley Christian School in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. He’s also worked with college programs like Air Force and Florida State as well as serving as assistant coach at Colorado College and Portland Bible.
“But something has been chewing at me to get back into high school athletics,” Butterworth said. “So when I heard rumblings that Ted Buck might be retiring, it felt like a good fit. Working with King’s Way through Shoot 360, we’ve always had a great relationship.”
Harmeling said King’s Way received more than 80 applications for the opening before turning to Butterworth, who Harmeling said has the vision necessary to be a good administrator and the ability to put that vision into action.
“Brad has a track record of excellence,” Harmeling said. “Any event that he’s ever been part of has always been first rate. He has a passion for athletics and he understands how athletics are really just a vehicle for kids to become successful in life.”
Butterworth has been living in Indiana since last fall where he’s been expanding Shoot 360. He plans to return to Clark County by the end of next month.
