Lucky 21 employees out 3 weeks’ pay

The April 8 closure of the Lucky 21 Casino in Woodland — also known as the Oak Tree Casino — left most of the business’s 115 employees not only suddenly unemployed, but also unpaid for their final three weeks of work.

“This was a pay day, so we were all waiting for a paycheck,” said Zhanna Roth-Slatzer, a former floor supervisor and shift manager.

Instead, employees who showed up for work found the doors locked and signs taped to the windows stating that the casino had closed down as of 6 a.m.

Cowlitz County deputy killed while investigating disabled vehicle

LONGVIEW — The Cowlitz County sheriff’s deputy shot in the line of duty Saturday night has died, and a manhunt for the “suspect or suspects” is ongoing, according to Clark County investigators. Sheriff’s officials Sunday afternoon identified the fallen deputy as Justin DeRosier, 29.

Authorities previously said they had found a person of interest in the shooting, but they announced Sunday afternoon that at least one suspect is still being pursued. They did not disclose any names.

Portland International Airport preparing for takeoff

Nick Alquiza, 23, was drawn to the fact that addiction recovery could be physical.

Alquiza, who had struggled with drug use, was never into the usual 12-step programs or 30- to 60-day inpatient rehab centers, but with Tree House Recovery PDX in North Portland, the Portland resident discovered a unique approach to tackling addiction.
