‘Froggy Robber’ pleads guilty in six bank robberies

A Clark County man dubbed the “Froggy Robber” pleaded guilty Monday in federal court in connection to a string of Portland-area bank robberies.

Diego Sanchez-Lopez, 24, pleaded guilty to six counts of bank robbery in U.S. District Court in Oregon. The robberies, one of which was in downtown Vancouver, were carried out between November 2017 and April 2018, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Sanchez-Lopez stole $15,400 from the Vancouver Wells Fargo Bank branch at 1800 Main St., on Feb. 12, the news release states.

The other robberies were: $9,710 from Albina Community Bank, 2002 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., in Portland, on Nov. 27; $26,000 from Wells Fargo Bank, 8699 S.W. Main St., in Wilsonville, Ore., on Dec. 27; $11,580.99 from Wells Fargo Bank, 6785 Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway in Beaverton, Ore., on Jan. 11; $6,720 from U.S. Bank, 52313 Columbia River Highway in Scappoose, Ore., on Jan. 30; and $33,357 from Wells Fargo Bank, 7200 N.E. Butler St., in Hillsboro, Ore., on April 30.

In all of the robberies, Sanchez-Lopez jumped over the teller counters and threatened bank employees with a knife, according to the news release. The “Froggy Robber” moniker refers to him leaping over the counters.

Authorities announced the indictment against Sanchez-Lopez in September 2018.

Sanchez-Lopez will be sentenced Nov. 5 by U.S. District Court Judge Michael W. Mosman, according to the news release.

The robbery convictions each carry a maximum of 25 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release. Due to his citizenship status, Sanchez-Lopez will be subject to deportation, according to the news release.
