Hudson’s Bay Boys: Eagles work through kinks to get better

Sixth-year coach Theo Mikaele called his Hudson’s Bay squad “a brand-new team.” The Eagles have just one returning starter and a bevy of freshmen looking to make their names.

That means Hudson’s Bay could take some lumps early. A 69-27 season-opening loss to Ridgefield made that abundantly clear. But it also means the Eagles will have equally impressive outings too. A 54-53 comeback win over Seton Catholic two days later showed that.

“We have to work through the kinks and get the chemistry down,” Mikaele said. “We’re just trying to get some kids up to speed at the varsity level.”

To help anchor the squad are 6-foot-4 senior bigs Trenton Jackson and Tony King. The Eagles want to press and run, though, to take advantage of the athleticism they have elsewhere on the court.

Leading in that regard might be 5-10 freshman Emmanuel Minnieweather, who drew plenty of praise from his coach after his first varsity action.

“I’m excited to see him learn and grow,” Mikaele said.

After finishing 3-15 last season, and sixth place in the 3A Greater St. Helens League, Mikaele is hoping the fresh faces can bring new life to his program.

“When people come to play Hudson’s Bay, I want them to know it’s going to be a dogfight,” the coach said.
