PORTLAND — A pickup truck heading east on Highway 126W struck a bicyclist early Christmas Day, killing the 49-year-old rider, according to Oregon State Police.
The crash occurred about 4:30 a.m., near milepost 51, and the highway was closed for about four hours as emergency personnel responded.
A red GMS Sierra pickup driven by Conrad Schwarzkopf, 25, of Springfield, struck the bicyclist in the eastbound lane, according to a preliminary investigation.
Travis Ewert, of Veneta, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.
Schwarzkopf was not injured.
Eugene firefighters, Eugene police and state transportation officials assisted state police in the investigation.
