Letter: Herrera Beutler is effective

I initially thought Greg Jayne’s Jan. 27 column was about the government shutdown. Somehow, Jayne used it to deride Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, for cutting taxes 14 months ago. Huh? Earth to Greg: Jaime voting to allow 9 out of 10 Washingtonians to keep more of their paychecks and the president’s wall efforts have nothing in common.

Remember: during the shutdown, Herrera Beutler was pushing for a reasonable solution of reopening the government while funding border security. Not a peep from Greg Jayne on Jaime’s efforts there, though.

After all that Congresswoman Herrera Beutler has accomplished — from salmon preservation, to saving the lives of mothers, to securing laws that help marginalized residents grow businesses — you’d think The Columbian could take a break from raging against Republicans to recognize her effectiveness and independence. Don’t hold your breath.
