Letter: Action needed on acidification

By Julia Rosenstein, Vancouver
Published: June 6, 2019, 6:00am

With all due respect to D. Alton Johnson, (“Herrera Beutler takes right steps,” Our Readers’ Views, May 28) I personally do not see what steps Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, has taken to fight ocean acidification.

Ocean acidification is caused directly by our oceans absorbing carbon dioxide, and the only way to fight this problem is to shutter all coal-fired power plants, stop allowing people to heat their homes with coal, clamp down on the fossil fuel industry, and make that industry sequester carbon dioxide in the ground. I know conservatives do not like President Obama, but at least he established rules to sequester carbon dioxide in the ground, all undone by the most ignorant president we have ever had, Donald Trump.

Whenever Rep. Herrera Beutler runs for office, she always runs on the platform “jobs and economy.” How selfish of us human beings to place ourselves above our planet. Now that our economy is doing well, isn’t it about time she ran on a platform of environmentalism? If you think shellfish losing their ability to make shells is a problem, wait until krill does the same. We will lose a lot of sea life, including whales.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
