The condition of a Vancouver man seriously wounded when his neighbor shot him Sunday while he was mowing his lawn has improved.

A spokesperson at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center said Ralph Michael Gigantelli, 53, was listed in satisfactory condition Wednesday morning. Satisfactory generally means a patient is awake and alert.

Gigantelli was hospitalized for a head wound, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Earlier this week, he was listed in critical condition, which generally means a person’s vital signs are unstable and their prospects for survival are unknown.

Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Barsness said Tuesday it was unclear if Gigantelli and the shooter, 56-year-old David Raymond Cannon, interacted or exchanged words before Cannon fired his weapon. Barsness said investigators had not yet interviewed Gigantelli due to ongoing medical treatment.

The sergeant said additional details about the shooting would not yet be released.

Shortly after noon Sunday, a man, later identified as Cannon, carrying a .45-caliber pistol, walked across the street and shot his neighbor, Gigantelli, who was mowing his lawn, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Afterward, Cannon walked up to Gigantelli’s porch, where he shot and killed himself, said Sgt. Brent Waddell, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office. The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday that Cannon died of a gunshot wound to the head. His death was ruled a suicide.

According to Clark County District Court records, Gigantelli filed a petition for a protection order against Cannon on Jan. 22. He claimed he had been harassed by Cannon, which included several threats made in person and through texts and voicemail messages.
