Letter: Thanks for crackdown on scofflaws

Thanks for your recent letter, Troy Haliwell (“Our Readers’ Views,” May 5, The Columbian). Yes, “residents should pay their way!”

Jim Moeller tried in vain to “right” this inequality by trying to pass this bill, years ago.

When walking my 49th Legislative District, in an attempt to register voters, I would notice Oregon license plates. Often residents would reply that they moved to Vancouver because of “Lower taxes and good schools.”

While at a local Dollar Store, a resident I recognized flashed her Oregon driver’s license for a purchase of only $8.

I asked the clerk if this occurred often. She replied, “Oh my gosh, yes, on some days, several times.”

A Realtor, in a plea to sell my house, was laughing as he told of his brother, who lives here and, “does his Oregon ID all the time!”

Prior to their Oregon expiration date, they can go online, claiming loss of driver’s license, then get a new one with an extended expiration date.

Aren’t we lucky to have such “honest, involved, caring citizens?” I thank those legislators who passed SB 5362.
