Letter: Nothing hypocritical about it

In response to ” ‘Heartbeat’ bills hypocritical” (Our Readers’ Views, May 16), the writer questions what folks think of her thoughts. Roberta Upson’s attempts to merge those of us who believe in the sanctity of innocent life, and those who support the death penalty in crimes of wanton killing are beyond absurd.

I legally support holding people accountable for their actions in this life, and the degree to which they choose to conduct themselves, especially as it pertains to their life patterns of respect/care of those around them. I was always taught from my earliest science classes that where there is growth, there is life, and certain rules of science cannot be devalued or explained away for simple convenience purposes.

Your life is, in most cases, what you make of it, and in this country at least, beyond the sky can be your limit, your choice. To equate a life interrupted in mid-fruition to that of anyone’s reckless poor choices causes our once-stellar conscience to question itself. Sad indeed.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
