Letter: We need a green recovery

This week was Earth Day. We should have been out in the streets, protesting, making our voices heard. Instead, we are hiding in our homes, struggling for attention. It now appears likely that the coronavirus made the interspecies leap from wild animals to humans because of our mistreatment of the Earth and its wild creatures and places. This disaster has pointed out the underlying challenges we face. We are now experiencing a climate emergency and a potential climate collapse.

Because of the global pandemic and the outrageous response of the Trump administration, it is easy to lose sight of the enormous work to be done before the November election. Joe Biden may not be your ideal presidential candidate, but he appears to be who the Democratic Party will nominate. Please join me in working to elect him. Urge candidates for all elective offices to learn from this global emergency and support green energy. We need a green recovery, not one based on fossil fuels. We must seize this opportunity to create jobs that will help the planet heal rather than continue to damage it. If we are to have a planet worth leaving for our grandchildren we must accept that there is no Planet B.
