Letter: Suggestions needed for moving on

Councilor Eileen Quiring asks “How could we possible move into a faster phase than what the governor’s administration might want to do?” (“Quiring, Medvigy raise objections,” The Columbian, April 23).

So did she offer any suggestions? Based on the front-page story it didn’t seem like she did. Vancouver’s mayor and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, met to discuss some earlier openings for the city (“McEnerny-Ogle, Herrera Beutler push rapid tests for construction workers,” The Columbian, April 22). Why wasn’t someone from the county council at those meetings?

If our corner of the state presented a united front and had ideas about how we could move into a faster phase while still being safe, perhaps that would instill the confidence the governor needs to see that there is indeed leadership in Clark County that wants to get things done and not just complain. In my part of the county, we are not “restless natives.” We’re trying hard to comply with the stay-at-home orders, staying busy and positive and looking out for each other.

Neither are we “thoroughly scared.” We’re ready to get back out there, but safely. The county councilors could instill more confidence by thanking us for doing those things and then working on real plans for getting society reopened responsibly.
