A man wanted in connection with a homicide in Portland shot himself Thursday evening during a standoff with police in Hazel Dell.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

The Southwest Washington Regional SWAT team was called shortly before 5 p.m. to assist detectives from the Portland Police Bureau with arresting a wanted man. The suspect was located in an industrial area near Northeast 78th Street and Northeast 19th Court, the news release states.

According to a spokesperson with the Vancouver Police Department, the man was wanted in connection with a homicide investigation.

He fled into a nearby building and barricaded himself inside a bathroom. Crisis negotiators spoke with the suspect by phone, but he refused to surrender, according to the sheriff’s office.

The standoff ended when the man shot himself, the sheriff’s office said. Clark County Fire District 6 was called at 5:53 p.m. to an intentional, self-inflicted gunshot wound in the 1900 block of Northeast 78th Street, emergency dispatch logs show.

No further information about the incident was released.
