MARRION — Kay Loghry, 84, recently was honored by Joslin Diabetes Center, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, for living more than 50 years with diabetes. Called The Medalist Program and Study, the program recognizes and studies people who have lived with Type 1 diabetes for at least five decades. She received the accolades in the mail in earlier this month, according to her daughter, Karen Loghry. One of Kay’s doctors suggested she submit. “Not only did she get a certificate, she got a really nice medal on a ribbon that she’s going to wear to her next appointment with her local diabetes doctor,” Karen said. “She was just thrilled.” Kay has lived in Vancouver since the early 1940s. “Her discipline and enthusiastic self-care is an example for diabetics everywhere,” Karen said. “With everything that’s in the news now I just thought this was a good story and for other people who are struggling with it, maybe they would think, ‘Wow if this little old lady could do it maybe I can.’ ” Learn more about the program at www.joslin.org.
