Clark County reported 205 new COVID-19 cases and one new death Friday as hospitalizations declined from a Thursday spike.

Clark County Public Health reported the new fatality was a man age 80 or older with underlying health conditions. His death was the eighth confirmed or suspected death from COVID-19 since Dec. 11. In the eight days preceding Dec. 11, there were 15 deaths.

To date, Clark County has recorded 135 total COVID-19 deaths, with 124 confirmed and 11 listed as suspected, according to Public Health data.

A confirmed death is counted when COVID-19 is listed as cause of death or contributing factor on the death certificate and the case has a positive COVID-19 test. A suspected COVID-19 death is counted when the disease is not listed as a contributing factor on the death certificate but wasn’t ruled out as cause of death, and the person died within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test.

The new cases bring Clark County’s total to 1,008 for the week and 11,638 to date. The county averaged 144 new cases every day in the past seven days, according to Public Health data.

Public Health reported that the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 fell to 54 on Friday, down from 76 the day before, while the number of people hospitalized awaiting test results rose from six on Thursday to nine on Friday. The percent of licensed beds occupied by those cases was 9.8, down from 12.8 percent on Thursday.

The number of active and potentially contagious cases, which tracks people still in their isolation period, was 930 on Friday, up from 842 on Thursday, according to Public Health data.

Clark County Public Health also reported four COVID-19 outbreaks at Clark County schools as of Thursday. Two outbreaks were reported at Kings Way Christian School, with one outbreak involving two students and one staff member and a second involving two students. One outbreak was reported at Skyridge Middle School in Camas, involving one student and one staff member, and the Washougal School District reported an outbreak involving five staff members and no students.

Information about school outbreaks is updated weekly at clark.wa.gov/public-health/covid-19-cases-schools.
