Art galleries and local businesses celebrate this month’s art shows with a First Friday Art Walk in downtown Vancouver from 5 to 9 p.m. Visitors can enjoy opening receptions and light refreshments at art galleries, after-hours shopping, dining and drink specials, live music and other events. www.vdausa.org.

Camas

First Fridays in Camas are themed, family-friendly events from 5 to 8 p.m. when galleries stay open late for artist receptions. Guests can also enjoy after-hours shopping, dining and activities inspired by the month’s theme. downtowncamas.com

Opening exhibit

“Emerging,” through Jan. 24, with an artists’ reception from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on First Friday, Jan. 3. Union Chapel Creatives Collaborative and Union Chapel Gallery opens another in a series of community art exhibitions featuring artists from the local community, including Virginia Barber, Sylvia Danielson, William C. Ferguson, Lori McDonald, Tracy Spohn and Dieter Zander. “Narratives & Metaphors” through Feb. 1, with a recpetion from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 3 offering wine, refreshments, live jazz guitar by John Stowel and a chance to meet the artist. This exhibit features the works of David Carmack Lewis, a muralist whose art explores imagery of the American West through a lens of magic realism to tell both true stories and tall tales. Continuing exhibits

“Whispers in the Wind,” through January. This exhibit features 12-inch squares of fiber art by members of the quilting group Vagabonds, including Ada Levins, Joanne Adams Roth, Wilma Fletcher Scott, Audrey Prothero, Karan Brooks, Sharry Olmstead, Lynn Czaban, Beverly Woodard and Val Pellens.Second Story Gallery, upstairs in the Camas Public Library, 625 N.E. Artist Group Show, through January. An exhibit featuring a variety of work by the gallery’s artists, including photography, watercolor, acrylic, fused glass, and other mediums. “Kevin Peters: Redefining Past and Present,” through Feb. 15, features art by Nez Perce artist Kevin Peters. His most coveted pieces are traditional works such as quilts, headdresses, and buckskin and rawhide items. His works honor past artists while reflecting contemporary Nez Perce culture. “Twist,” through Feb. 28. This exhibit features the work of Sherry Saele and Krista Anara Cibis, tweaking traditional forms of fiber arts and using techniques such as weaving, needle point, jewelry making, and other processes that cross back and forth from craft to art to practical handiwork. “In Stillness and Motion; Containment of the Aesthetic,” through March 23, with a free artists’ reception from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 3. This exhibit features the work of Megan Eckman and Alder Suttles. Eckman’s “Flatteringly Flat” series revels in the aesthetic interplay of pattern on pattern.
