The owner of Burton’s Market in Vancouver’s Ogden neighborhood says her husband was robbed at knifepoint Monday morning.

Vancouver police officers were dispatched at 9:04 a.m. to the convenience store at 8601 N.E. Burton Road for a report of a robbery that just occurred.

The clerk, identified by owner Robin Singh as her husband Gian Singh, was robbed when the suspect brandished a knife and took some cash, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said in an email.

Robin Singh said a man entered the store and demanded money. The robber came behind the counter and Gian Singh struggled with the man. The clerk had a pistol and tried to fire it twice, but the gun broke during the fight, Robin Singh said.

The robber eventually dropped the knife, grabbed about $100 and ran off, she said.

Police described the assailant as a white man, between 25 and 30 years old, with a medium build and white hair. Robin Singh said the man dropped his wallet that had his ID before running off, which she provided to police.

Gian Singh is upset about the robbery but uninjured, his wife said.

Robin Singh said she’d like people to be careful and watchful during these times when many law-abiding residents are staying at home. She’s worried that more of these kinds of crimes are happening in the community right now.

On Sunday night, Clark County sheriff’s deputies responded to the intersection of Northeast 121st Avenue and 65th Street for a report of a robbery that just occurred. Sgt. Brent Waddell said in an email that the incident was an attempted robbery in which the victim was attacked and cut with a knife.

Kapp said it is currently unknown if there is a connection between the attempted robbery and the robbery at Burton’s.
