An encampment that was previously at Vancouver Mall will reopen at C-Tran’s Evergreen Transit Center pending the approval by the transit agency’s directors, the city of Vancouver announced Friday.

The safe-park program started April 2 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, serving as the home base for about 60 people living in 40 vehicles. The site shuttered about four weeks later as the mall looked into stores providing curb-side pickup. The city has since been looking for a new site to host the safe-park program.

“It’s unfortunate that participants had to experience an interruption in service, but we are excited to be partnering with C-Tran on the next chapter of the Safe Parking Zone,” Dave Perlick, the city’s recreation manager, said in a news release.

The transit center at 1504 N.E. 138th Ave. will remain limited to 40 vehicles, including up to seven recreational vehicles. C-Tran’s board of directors will discuss the relocation at its June 9 board meeting.

The encampment provided a safe, free and legal place for people living in their cars or campers to shelter-in-place. It included restrooms and garbage service.
